Jamaica Police Co-Op Credit Union donates over $1.2m to its members
Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union Limited | 2013-02-27 00:00:00 Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union (JPCCU) handed over in excess of J$1.2 million for hurricane relief efforts for its Members at a Handover Ceremony held at its branch located at Pompano Commercial Centre in Tower Isle, St. Mary. Commitments were made to 23 Members from the parishes of St. Mary and Portland who applied for funds to assist them in rebuilding and repairing infrastructural damages they experienced during the passage of Hurricane Sandy.
Speaking at the Handover Ceremony, Mr. Anthony McLaughlin, JPCCU Board Member noted that, “a Disaster Relief Fund was approved by the Members present at a recent Annual General Meeting of Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union. After assessing the devastating effects of the Tropical Cyclone on the lives of our Members, the Board of Directors of JPCCU saw this as an opportunity to utilize the Fund as a part of the Credit Union’s Corporate Social Responsibility”.
Acting General Manager, Nattisha Scott indicated that the “St. Mary Branch has served the area for over seven years. During which time, the branch has been actively involved in the community development through the support of a number of corporate social outreach initiatives, such as the Police National Sports and the adoption of the Galina Basic School. The Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union has also contributed to the community development through the disbursement of Scholarships and Bursaries to students in the area pursuing their academic studies”.
The Members, who benefitted from this initiative were overjoyed to receive the support from the Credit Union and gave moving words of gratitude to the organization for reaching out to them. Almost five months after the hurricane, the residents are still in recovery mode, as they seek to rebuild their homes with a view to putting the memories of the damages behind and to move forward with their lives.
JPCCU continues to take pride in contributing to nation building and embraces opportunities to partner with Jamaica in developing its greatest resources, its people. The Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union is the fifth largest in the Credit Union Movement in Jamaica, managing assets in excess of J$3.4 Billion for a membership of approximately 17,000.

The Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union (JPCCU) proudly completed its 57th year in 2012. Despite the merger of two of our major competitors, we remain the fifth largest in the Credit Union Movement in Jamaica with an asset base of over J$3.4 billion and membership of approximately 17,000. A s a Credit Union, our Members’ needs remain at the centre of shaping our operating policies and decision making. The unwavering ommitment of the Board of Directors to continue overseeing the effective operations of this institution on your behalf will result in the harnessing of knowledge and ingenuity to accomplish the objectives articulated in our Vision and Mission statements.
2013 STRATEGIC FOCUS
At the Board level, we continue to make significant strides in transforming the Credit Union into a more relevant and nimble organisation. To this end, we have crafted and have begun implementing five (5) strategic goals for 2013. They are as follows:
The addition of new employees at the strategic level with new perspectives along with the deepening of the roles of the Management Team, have contributed to the renewing and refining of our drive in guiding the Credit Union to providing greater levels of service and financial security for you. We have listened, and as a result have already begun re-engineering many of our business processes. With the commencement of 2013, the Credit Union has embarked on achieving our strategic goals through increased drive and deliberate positioning. To serve you with even greater efficiency, a new banking system is being introduced that will allow for a more effective management of our operations. Your Portmore Branch was relocated to a larger space for greater comfort and privacy for you; similar improvements are on the way for your Kingston Branch.
Our Member Engagement Survey which commenced in 2012 was designed to assist us in achieving greater levels of innovation and excellence in the service offered to you, our Valued Members for 2013 and beyond. We continue to listen to your concerns; as such we have developed a team internally to focus on revising and improving our existing products and to guide the introduction of new product and service offerings. JPCCU is on a drive for 2013 to increase product awareness for all our Members, which will be evident in our branches by the end of the 2nd quarter.
Increased efforts are being made to improve our online image. Our new website is currently being designed to be equipped with more relevant information, to have a more user friendly look and feel, and to allow for real time internet banking. The introduction of our Facebook page is expected to allow us to have consistent and on-going interactions with our Members worldwide.
OVERSEAS MEMBERSHIP
JPCCU continues to make progress towards increasing our presence in the Diaspora; as such, we are taking on initiatives that will not only widen our reach to the overseas market but also deepen our penetration. We are committed through technology to increase our focus on serving our overseas membership even better. Accessing our products and services have become simpler and cost efficient for you as a result of our partnership with Reggae Money Express which facilitates the sending of money to us through Xoom.com. Our communication efforts and our communication channels have been increased and we are even more accessible through landlines, cell phones, Blackberry Pins, Facebook and our new website. In 2013, the Presidents of the various overseas Jamaica Ex-Police Association (JEPA) chapters have been engaged as liaisons for the Credit Union and will be equipped with information to share with the members of their respective chapters. We continue to partner with JEPA overseas, as they lend their support to various outreach initiatives in Jamaica. One such initiative is the support to the Jamaica Police Convalescent Centre towards enhancing its rehabilitation modalities.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
While we seek to grow through our strategic goals, we continue to increase our involvement in nation building and community development. Funds in excess of J$1.2 million were allocated for the assistance of our fellow Members’ recovery efforts from losses suffered, during the passage of Hurricane Sandy. Our commitment to sports development for the Police Force has also been an important part of our mandate, and 2012 marked a total spend of over J$12 million since 2006 towards these initiatives.
We implemented the JPCCU Youth Leaders Programme, where we identified and invested in four young members of the Credit Union and sought to increase their knowledge and interest in the Credit Union Movement through leadership training. JPCCU also continues to play its part in the academic development of Jamaicans through our commitment of over J$10 million since 2006 towards our Scholarships and Bursaries Programme, designed to increase educational opportunities for you and your families.
CONCLUSION
We continue to recognise and give thanks to our founding fathers, who had the foresight to have established this noble institution. We are committed to upholding their vision and building on their legacy. I salute you, our Valued Members who have entrusted us with your confidence, without whom, all our remarkable achievements over the years could not have been possible.
My fellow Directors, members of the Supervisory Committee, Credit Committee, and staff, your years of unwavering commitment and dedication to the Jamaica Police Co-operative Credit Union is greatly appreciated. Let me remind you that collectively we are the owners, operators and users of this institution. Let us continue to work together to make this Credit Union the premier financial institution of choice for us.
